Opponents of the planned third runway at Hong Kong International Airport said on Tuesday that the baggage incident involving the Chief Executive CY Leung's daughter shows that the authorities lack the credibility to undertake such a major infrastructure project.
They accused the Civil Aviation Department and Airport Authority of trying to cover up security lapses when Leung Chung-yan's carry-on baggage was rushed past security checks without her being present last month.
Michael Mo of the Airport Development Concern Network said officials should also not be trusted to resolve issues like overcrowded airspace, and the sharing of airspace with neighbouring cities that would come with the third runway.
