RTHK has denied accusations of self-censorship after it cancelled a recording with a core member of the newly-formed pro-democracy political party, Demosisto.
Kenneth Ip, also known as Shu Kei, said on his Facebook page that he had originally been invited to do a recording of "Hong Kong Letter" for RTHK's Chinese-language channel several days ago.
The film director said he had planned to mention issues like CY Leung's poor governance, the Occupy movement, and the recent winning of the controversial film "Ten Years" in the Hong Kong Film Awards.
However, Ip said the recording was cancelled but did not mention the reason for it.
Civic Party lawmaker, Claudia Mo, questioned if RTHK had practiced self-censorship and called on the Director of Broadcasting to come clean.
But an RTHK spokeswoman stressed political censorship was never at play. She said the public broadcaster had originally wanted Ip to focus on the controversies surrounding the film, Ten Years, and the development of the local film industry. She added that the cancellation was mutually agreed.
RTHK also made clear that it has produced many programmes that touch on sensitive political issues and therefore there was no question of self-censorship.
