A waste management company accused of discharging contaminated liquid into the sea has insisted that it always strictly adheres to the law, despite government officials warning they are going to fine the firm.
SITA said in a statement on Saturday that it will look into allegations that workers deliberately lowered temperatures when burning landfill gas at Pillar Point Valley to save money.
According to its contract, the firm is supposed to maintain a temperature of 1,000 degrees Celsius to remove toxic chemicals such as ammonium before the leachate is released.
But former employees at the company have claimed temperatures were lowered and only put up when inspectors visited.
The workers said on Saturday that their revelation to the media has since got them fired.
The Environmental Protection Department said SITA has already admitted that the temperature requirement was not met for a short period of time and the department is going to fine the company.
