The Chairman of the Commission of Youth said on Saturday that the government needs to clearly explain to people why it would not be feasible for Hong Kong to become independent.
Lau Ming-wai said top officials and pro-establishment figures have repeatedly rejected the idea, but have not properly addressed the views of those advocating independence.
Lau also told an RTHK programme that it is important for Hong Kong to boost its competitiveness so it has plenty of bargaining chips when it comes to negotiating with Beijing over the SAR's future after the “One Country, Two Systems” principle theoretically expires in 2047.
In recent weeks, groups that sprung up during the 2014 Occupy protests have put forward the suggestion that Hong Kong could one day break away from the mainland.
