A controversial pro-Beijing columnist is under fire after comparing a newly formed Hong Kong political party to a mental patient.
The Hong Kong College of Psychiatrists (HKCP) is demanding an apology from Chris Wat for insulting the mentally ill, Ming Pao Daily reports.
The Hong Kong Council of Social Service and the Hong Kong Joint Council for People with Disabilities accused Wat of pushing an argument at the expense of the disabled.
The Equal Opportunities Commission said it will look into the matter.
Writing in news website kinliu.com, Wat called the pro-independence Hong Kong National Party a “group of mentally ill people”.
They “cannot control themselves” and they “speak and act strangely”, she wrote.
Wat refused to take calls from Ming Pao Daily seeking clarification.
Government spokesman Andrew Fung, who shared Wat’s post on social media, refused to comment.
HKCP vice president Phyllis Chan said Wat and Fung should be held responsible for actions.
Both should apologize, she said.
