Ming Pao has sacked its executive chief editor, Keung Kwok-yuen, with immediate effect.
This was revealed by its staff association, which said the sacking was made at midnight on Tuesday.
The association said it's extremely angry about the decision and accused the principal executive editor Chong Tien-siong of using cost-cutting as an excuse to sack Keung. It alleged the decision was a punishment for his editorial decisions.
The association wants Chong and the management to explain what happened. It will hold a staff meeting on Wednesday evening to discuss the matter.
Democratic Party chairwoman Emily Lau urged the Ming Pao management to explain the sudden firing.
Lau, who used to head the Journalists Association, said that the move will have a chilling effect across the media industry.
