A famous cartoonist at Ming Pao daily, Wong Kei-kwan, responded to the controversial sacking of a senior editor at the newspaper by publishing just a dot on Thursday.
"It’s tough to operate a business. To save ink cost for the boss, I’ll just draw a dot today," Wong, who’s better known as Zhunzi, wrote on the panel that was bare except for a dot in the middle.
The management of the newspaper had issued a statement on Wednesday saying the sudden sacking of the executive chief editor Keung Kwok-yuen was part of its cost cutting measures.
The firing came on the same day as the newspaper published details about the financial dealings of prominent local tycoons and political figures, based on leaked documents from a Panamanian law firm.
Yuen Chan, a Chinese University journalism lecturer, told RTHK on Thursday that she found the sacking "unusual" and that explanation for the move was unconvincing.
The newspaper staff association had written to the company’s management to demand that it revisits its sudden decision.
Staff and many pro-democracy politicians claim that Keung was fired due to his editorial decisions and difficult business environment as the management says.
