The organisers of the June 4 Museum have issued an appeal to make records and documents of the 1989 Tiananmen protest to be included in Unesco’s Memory of World Register.

The Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements in China said on Friday that they hope the Unesco can make a decision by the end of next year.

Chairman of the alliance, lawmaker Albert Ho said they simply want the June 4 crackdown to be remembered by the world.

Unesco’s Memory of the World Register is a collection of documents, manuscripts, oral traditions, audio-visual materials, library, and archival holdings of universal value. The UN organ started the initiative to safeguard records considered important to humanity against destruction through passage of time or by some deliberate action.

The alliance had already said that the museum is closing down temporarily as they had to vacate its current premises in Tsim Tsa Shui, Kowloon. The organisers say the owners of the building have made the running of the museum difficult.

The alliance plans to raise funds and reopen the museum at a bigger place.
